Summary information of doctoral thesis at Instititue of Geography in 2012: PhD. Nguyen Manh Ha
SUMMARY ON NEW CONCLUSIONS OF DOCTORAL THESIS

PhD dissertation title: Studying soil degradation in Chay river basin for proper exploitation of natural and soil resources
Specialization: Geographical and environmental resources
Code No: 62.44.74.01
PhD student: Nguyen Manh Ha
Course: 2006 - 2010
Supervisors:
          1. PhD. Nguyen Dinh Ky
          2. PhD. Nguyen Lap Dan
Training Institution: Institute of Geography, Vietnam Academy of  Science and Technology

NEW CONCLUSIONS OF DOCTORAL THESIS

1. Protected arguments

Argument 1: Soil cover in Chay river basin is a set of pedo-geography elements in the Northern mountain range – the consequence of the interaction between geographical and non-geographical regulations.

Argument 2: General assessment to soil degradation in Chay river basin via the relationship between land – water as the basis for natural disasters prediction and recommendations of sustainable land-use measures in the basin.

2. New contributions of the PhD work

- Contribution to the development of research methodology in assessing natural and soil resources in the river basin

- Synthetic assessment to the situation and prediction of soil degradation in Chay river basin

- Recommendations for land-use and improvement of soil resources basing on soil degradation study and on the point of sustainable development for natural disasters prevention and reduction in Chay river basin

3.  Scientific and practical significance of the study

* Scientific significance

The dissertation contributes to the completion of methodology and the theme orientation in studying soil degradation for proper use of natural disasters in the river basin. The outcome of the dissertation is set as the scientific base for management of rivers in tropical mountainous area in Vietnam. At the same time, it will contribute itself as the database for soil resources data in Chay river basin.

* Practical significance

The research output of the dissertation is the scientific base for planning and management in river basins and for recommendations of sustainable land-use towards socio-economic development in Norther mountainous area.

4. Further Study

It is necessary to recommend land-use united and appropriate measures for sub-regions of upstream, middle and downstream in Chay river basin.
