Introduction on Institute of Geography

The Institute of Geography is a scientific unit of VAST, established on the decision No: 24CP dated 22 May, 1993 of Governent Prime Minister and by Decision No. 19/KHCNQG/QD dated 19 June 1993 of Directors of the National Centre for Natural Sciences and Technology. And which was advanced by Decision No. 62/2008/NĐ-CP dated 12 May, 2008 of Government Prime Minister and Decision No. 1985/QĐ-KHCNVN dated 26 Nov., 2008 of Director of VAST. Over 40 years of development, the Institute of geography has been awarded a lot such as Labour Medals (first class in 2008 - and second class in 2004), Ho Chi Minh award in Science and Technology (2005), Primer Minister's Award (2012), Labour Medals for some experts of IG, VIFOTECH awards, Patents in Science and Technology…


In the role of geography unit of VAST, the Institute of Geography has functions and tasks as bellowing:

Carrying out scientific and technological research in the following fields:
Research in synthetically natural conditions, resources and related socio-economic aspects to build a scientific basis for national and regional socio-economic development planning, participating in the appraisal of sustainable use of resources and environmental protection for socio-economic development projects
Applying modern technologies (remote sensing, information technology, automation, cartography, etc.) in geographical studies.
Collaborating with other domestic scientific institutions and production units in applying research results and in transferring foreign advanced technologies into production and life in Vietnam. Participating in training in geographical sciences and technologies. From 1995, the Institute of Geography has been assigned to train post-graduates by the Government, Prime Minister and Ministry of Education and Training in the geography majors: Physical Geography, Geomorphology and Geogeny, Hydrography, Resources and Environment Geography, Water Supply Development.

Conducting international cooperation in geography and resource management.
Preparing the material bases for applying and transferring advanced scientific and technological studies that are carried out by the Institute of Geography.
Managing the Institute's human resources, infrastructure and other properties.
